GEOGRAPHICAL
SETTING
Northern offshore Tunisia.
ACREAGE
7910 km2.
PREVIOUS
EXPLORATION
In La Galite Block, several seismic surveys have been recorded,
with a total of 760 km. But, no wells have been drilled.
However, one well has been drilled in the vicinity of the block.
GEOLOGICAL
SETTING
The
block is located within the offshore continuation of the North
African overthrust belt(Maghrebides). It corresponds to a gently
sloping continental shelf, including La Galite archipelageo
which is formed of Oligo - Miocene flysch associated with
Miocene igneous rocks. The shelf geology seems to resemble the
onshore Tellian Altas ; the immediatly subsea terranes would
corres
pond to
the Numidian flysch nappe, trending northeast - southwest and
affected by numerous thrusts.
HYDROCARBON
POTENTIAL
Data on reservoirs
and source rocks are missing within the block. However, the
Cretaceous and Lower Eocene organic-rich facies, identified in
the nearby onshore acreage, are expected to be also potential
source rocks in La Galite Block. Potential reservoirs would
include Oligo-Miocene clastic turbidites within the Numidian
flysch and Eocene and Upper Cretaceous fractured carbonates.
Traps would be mainly structural, with thrust - related types.
